સફર – journey, (2024)

Inspired by the newspaper archives at the McMillan Memorial Library in Nairobi. These mixed-media sculptural works include a metal tea urn – objects evocative of those carried across borders in 1972 following Idi Amin’s expulsion of Asians from Uganda.

The works draw from visual material gathered through archival research, tracing obfuscated narratives that resist easy recollection. Using photo-transfer techniques derived from newspaper imagery alongside drawings from family archives, the works map parallel trajectories of migration, displacement and memory.

Circular forms recur throughout the series as cut-outs from postcards and applications of gold leaf, functioning as gestures of mapping, movement and the dispersal of people and communities.

Mixed media: 24-karat gold leaf, pencil, gouache, photo-transfer, postcards, plaited silk, object, chain and tea urn; each 80 x 30 x 15 cm
