In the stifled depths of darkness, I will tell you who is power (2024)

Reflecting the multiplicity of my diasporic identity, In the Stifled Depths of Darkness, I Will Tell You Who Is Power (2024) traces my family’s migration across India, East Africa, and the UK over the last hundred years. Combining an image from 1972, first published in the East Africa Standard newspaper, with family photographs, this work navigates the blurred lines between public record and personal memory. It speaks to the ambiguities, tensions, and resilience woven through diasporic experience. For me, this work on paper serves as a portal: a space to imagine encounters with my ancestors, and to carry and share their histories, experiences, and strength.
