In the stifled depths of darkness, I will tell you who is power (2024)

Reflecting the multiplicity of diasporic identity, In the Stifled Depths of Darkness, I Will Tell You Who Is Power (2024) draws on histories of movement across India, East Africa and the UK over the course of a century. Combining a photograph first published in the East Africa Standard in 1972 with an image of my grandmother and great aunt, the work inhabits the space between historical record and lived memory, exploring what it means to belong across places and generations.

Developed through the 20/20 residency and now held in twenty UK museum collections, the work continues an enquiry into how stories like my own might be encountered within institutional records.

Through collage and layering, the work functions as a portal – a site for imagined encounters with those who came before me and for remaining in relation to the stories and forms of resilience they leave behind.
