When the sky is a shape – Golden Hour (2022-23)
Between 2022-23, the Hospital Rooms undertook their most ambitious project to date in partnership with South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust. As part of the development of two new mental health facilities at Springfield University Hospital, they commissioned 20 major artworks to transform how hospital wards are experienced by patients, service users and staff.
The resulting site-specific work for the new family room on the forensic unit
When the sky is a shape – Golden Hour is inspired by the motif of clouds drawing on the continuous site lines and surrounding landscape with a particular focus on cloud formations taken from paintings, landscapes, and textures as a metaphor for the ever-changing structures of support. The walls behind the panels are painted with a gradient moving from pink to blue that mimics a sunrise or sunset, transforming the light and providing an environment with a sense of calm and imagination.
“So calming to experiment with inks today. And joyful!”
Testimonial from workshop service user
In 2022, I led a workshop in the Shaftesbury clinic of Springfield University Hospital and a second workshop at The Courtauld in April 2022. Participants worked with marbling ink on paper to make abstract patterns. They spoke about an artwork to “take your mind off things” using subtle textures, pastel shades, and influences from the natural world.
